A Year of Resistance

A Guide to What’s Happening on the One Year Anniversary of the Inauguration of Donald Trump

January 19, 2018

It’s been one year since 45 came into the White House and took the country by storm. For many, this past year has felt far longer than 365 days, or better yet, a year in the upside-down (that’s for you “Stranger Things” alternate universe).

Between political scandal and xenophobic attacks followed by policy, the election of 2016 has felt more like a battlefield of resistance. Around the nation, demonstrations filled the 2016 calendar. And because he is still here – the protest continues, marking a year of resistance.

Take note and take action with one of these three event happening this weekend that you should know about:

ART ACTION DAY

Art Action Day begins at 12 a.m. on January 20, and ends at 12 a.m. January 21. The Federation, a group committed to the “reality of showing the power of the arts in activism,” invites individuals, communities and organizations to participate. They encourage actions and programming that celebrate the guiding principles of The Federation and send positive messages about the power of the arts for uniting peoples, cultures, cities, and the world. Check out their website to find out where an art action event is taking place near you.

WOMEN’S MARCH

The main Women’s March event this year has been moved from D.C. to Las Vegas taking place Sunday, January 21. Entitled, “Women’s March Anniversary: Power to the Polls,” scheduled participants include Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund; Rep. John Lewis; and Alicia Garza, co-founder of Black Lives Matter. If you’re not in Vegas, there are marches this weekend in all 50 states and around the world. Check out this map to find a march near you. The Women’s March Facebook page is also a useful resource.

#J2018 RALLY

DisruptJ20 calls itself the “DC counter-inaugural welcoming committee,” and promises a very left-wing week of resistance. On January 20, the group plans to continue the resistance after a week of events with a rally in DC. Last year this time, Inauguration protests were planned regardless of who won the election but Trump’s victory saw events and expected attendances increase. Follow #J2018 on social media all week for more details.

Whatever you choose to do this weekend, take a moment of silence and then get loud! Speak up and speak out. It’s time to reclaim justice.
