Advancement Project’s National Office is seeking an experienced, motivated and talented professional with demonstrable experience securing funding from various sources to join our leadership team as Managing Director of Development. This position is based in Advancement Project’s National Office in Washington DC and executes program plan initiatives under the supervision of the Executive Office.

DESCRIPTION OF ROLE

The Managing Director of Development will be responsible for creating and implementing a comprehensive development strategy to raise an organizational budget of $7M through diverse funding streams. The Managing Director of Development will participate with other senior leaders in determining the strategic priorities and activities of the organization. The Managing Director of Development will be responsible for all fundraising endeavors to increase public awareness, grow donor support and overall philanthropic contribution. Objectives to be met encompass developing a strategic fundraising agenda, executing on that agenda to achieve and exceed revenue goals, and working with colleagues and external partners on all aspects of development and network outreach.  The Managing Director will manage and lead a junior team of development professionals.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT

-In partnership with the Executive Director, Board, and relevant committees, direct all of the fundraising activities of the national office, including identifying funding opportunities from foundations and corporations, prospecting individual and major donors, and implementing targeted strategies for each opportunity.

-Develop a strategic fundraising plan from diverse sources, including foundations, corporations, and individual donors with targeted goals, objectives, methods, quantifiable outcomes and timelines.

-Cultivate and manage strategic multiracial relationships, coalitions, and partnerships with stakeholders to build power in communities of color and create a diverse constituency of support for reform.

-Foster partnerships and strategic alliances that are advantageous in the philanthropic community and increase avenues of support.

-Work collaboratively with the Executive Director, leadership team and project staff to develop project goals and create work plans that articulate goals/objectives related to development.

-Manage the Annual Reporting and development team general reporting process.

-Utilize metrics and reporting to track progress towards goals, and to keep the leadership team apprised of successes and challenges by identifying cultural trends related to philanthropy.

-Develop budgets and fundraising reports related to funding sources.

DEVELOPMENT

-Strengthen existing relationship with funders, ensuring that they are appropriately engaged and invested in the Advancement Project mission.

-Working closely with program and project staff to review deliverables and outcomes to comply with donor and/or grant expectations and be aware of programmatic needs for funding.

-Manage and support the donor engagement cycle for all key prospects, high net worth individuals and foundations, including primary responsibility for identification, research, qualification, and cultivation.

-Generate and manage donor support, in addition, to perform grant writing/reporting and manage foundational grant awards.

-Support the solicitation, recognition, and stewardship of prospects in addition to performing research, implementing, and maintaining constituent data to populate a donor database.

-Seek and participate in external events and networking opportunities, e.g., industry conferences, workshops, and funder convenings.

COMMUNICATIONS

-In partnership with Managing Director of Communications, execute strategies to increase the visibility of the organization, including design and development of all marketing materials.

-Persuasively articulate the mission, goals and program/project priorities of Advancement Project’s national office in written and oral presentation.

-Develop presentation materials, slides, scripts, talking points and proposal collateral for prospect meetings.

-Works in collaboration with communications team to develop and align strategic messaging related to development.

-Reviews the teams work products to ensure the consistent production of high-quality work products and advocacy materials related to development topics.

ADMINISTRATION

-Manage the Development team’s budget effectively and adjust expenditures as necessary.

-Supervise team, provide timely feedback and support growth of members.

-Lead, build and motivate an energetic, innovative and responsive team.

-Foster individual and team member growth and promote team goals and objectives.

-Maintain collegial work relationships across the organization.

-Periodically supervise department interns and/or volunteer staff.

-Represent department as a member of various organizational committees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

-A demonstrated commitment to racial and social justice required.

-Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.

-Seven to ten years of broad fundraising experience (i.e. foundations, individual giving, major gifts, corporate gifts and foundation relations), with particular strength raising funds from foundations and individuals, along with a thorough knowledge of fundraising principles.

-Track record of having raised significant funds for nonprofit organizations

-Extensive experience interacting and working with high-level contacts, including board members donors and foundation officials.

-Experience developing a strategic vision for development that supports the strategic direction of the organization; the ability to translate that vision into a comprehensive, actionable fundraising plan.

-Demonstrated success as a leader, supervising, leading and influencing a team of professionals.

-Prior experience working with grassroots organizations and/or in non-profit environments required; specific organizing and advocacy campaign experience strongly preferred.

-Track record of getting results, meeting deadlines, handling a heavy workload and developing strong working relationships with and among a diverse group of people.

-Fundraising, budgeting and planning experience.

-Prior project management experience is necessary and strong technical skills are highly desired.

-Must possess strong interpersonal, research, analytical and writing skills.

-Superior oral communications skills.

-Previous work in a cross-functional or matrix team environment strongly preferred.

-Willingness to travel on a reoccurring basis required.
