Gupta is the first woman of color to be confirmed to the role

Washington, D.C. – Advancement Project National Office welcomes the confirmation of Vanita Gupta as the third highest ranking official in the U.S. Department of Justice after the U.S. Senate confirmed Gupta this week.

Advancement Project National Office issued the following statement:

“Vanita’s record as a civil rights lawyer and advocate speaks for itself. As our nation continues to plot a course through dismantling systemic racism and its barriers, Vanita will be a powerful ally in her role as Associated Attorney General at the Department of Justice. Vanita’s experience at the helm of the largest, most diverse civil rights coalition in the U.S. gives her a unique perspective at addressing the continued inequalities impacting Black, Brown people, Asians, Pacific Islanders and Indigenous people in the nation’s criminal justice system and advocating for their rights. Advancement Project National Office applauds her confirmation as the first woman of color to hold the position and looks forward to seeing the impact her experience will bring to the Department of Justice.”
