Advancement Project National Office Applauds Supreme Court’s Decision To Rule Against Trump Administration Ending DACA
Washington, D.C. – Advancement Project National Office and its partners are applauding today’s 5-4 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court to block the Trump administration from ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program.
“Today the Supreme Court ruled on the right side of history, rebuking the Trump administration’s attempt to get rid of the DACA program. For over 800,000 immigrant youth, their loved ones, and their communities, this is a huge win and a sigh of relief,” said Losmin Jimenez, Project Director and Senior Attorney, Immigrant Justice at Advancement Project National Office. “Since the Trump administration capriciously ended the DACA program on September 5, 2017, immigrant youth, their families, and allies have been fighting to protect DACA – this win is a testament to the power of this movement. While this decision will give needed relief for hundreds of thousands of immigrant youth, it is unfortunately only a temporary reprieve and we fear provides a roadmap for the Trump administration on how to end the program in the future.”
The Trump administration still has the authority to rescind DACA again and could do so as soon as possible, albeit this time probably while attempting to adhere to the court’s narrow ruling. Advancement Project National Office and its partners will continue working at the local and federal level to decriminalize migration until communities of color are free and safe.
“DACA was formed thanks to the organizing of young undocumented immigrants who occupied Obama’s offices during his first term. History repeats itself—the win today is thanks to the organizing of this generation’s young immigrant leaders. We know that any future wins will be moved from the bottom up, and while we celebrate today, we commit ourselves to continuing to fight state-sanctioned violence against communities of color,” said Erika Guadalupe Nuñez, Executive Director of Junto’s in Pennsylvania and partner of Advancement Project National Office.
“Today, we celebrate! Tomorrow, we will continue to do the work to ensure that all 11 million undocumented immigrants in this country have a path to citizenship,” said Daniel Leon-Davis, Board Member with Advancement Project National Office, who lived in Florida as an undocumented immigrant for 19 years. “This is a big win for our immigrant community that has been under constant attack under this administration.”
“Today’s decision is a huge relief for 25,000 DACA recipients in Arizona, including 6,800 DACA recipients who are COVID 19 frontline workers here in the state. We know that that the Arizona economy and COVID19 crisis could not afford for DACA recipients to be at risk of deportation,” said Natally Cruz, a DACA recipient and member of Puente Human Rights Movement, partner of Advancement Project National Office. “We need DACA recipients, like me, to continuously feel safe in their own community. Even with today’s decision, we call on deportations to stop. To prevent the separation of families, and the stop to dehumanizing treatment inside detention centers. We call on the end of local and federal enforcement collaboration.”
