Esperanza SegarraSenior Staff Attorney
Esperanza Segarra is Senior Staff Attorney for our Power & Democracy team focusing on voting rights and rights restoration. Prior to joining Advancement Project National Office, she was Of Counsel with Darrow Everett LLP. Esperanza also served as Senior Counsel with the foremost Latino civil rights organization in the country, LatinoJustice PRLDEF, where she was part of the litigation team in several class actions in federal courts in New York and Florida focusing on voting rights, immigrants’ rights, and criminal justice reform. She has co-authored several amicus briefs, including one filed with the U.S. Supreme Court on the citizenship question in the 2020 Census.
Prior to her civil rights work with LJP, Esperanza was a partner with Hinshaw & Culbertson, LLP, and focused her practice in complex commercial and civil litigation in various areas including banking litigation, director and officer liability, bankruptcy and receiverships, real property litigation, and contract disputes. She also had an appellate practice. Esperanza has substantial trial experience at both state and federal levels.
Esperanza also served her country for seven years as an enlisted service member of the U.S. Air Force, stationed at the Pentagon, with assignments at the U.S. Capitol, and the Strategic Air Command (SAC). Esperanza received her BA with high distinction from George Mason University and a JD from University of Illinois College of Law.
During law school, Esperanza served an internship as a law clerk at the Department of Children and Families, in Miami. She was a summer law clerk with Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc. She is barred in Washington, DC, Florida and New York.
Esperanza is an adjunct professor at Rutgers Law School teaching Trade Secrets Law, and the proud mother of her son Alexander.
