Advancement Project National Office on President Biden’s Nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for the Supreme Court

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, February 25, 2022

WASHINGTON, DC —  This morning, it was reported that President Biden plans to nominate Ketanji Brown Jackson to the United States Supreme Court. Pending Senate approval, Brown Jackson would be the first Black woman to serve as a Supreme Court Justice.

Statement from Judith Browne Dianis, a leading Black civil rights lawyer, and executive director of the Advancement Project National Office, on the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for the Supreme Court:

“Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is one of our country’s brightest legal minds with real experience defending people within the broken and often unforgiving criminal legal system. Her experiences both within the legal system, and on the bench will make her an exceptional Justice – and we celebrate her nomination for the highest court in the land.

“Make no mistake, she will make history as the first Black woman on the Supreme Court, but she will also make history as the first public defender on the Supreme Court – someone who knows and can speak to the experiences of far too many people across the country who often are denied access to true justice.

“We celebrate her historic nomination and urge her swift confirmation.”
