WASHINGTON, DC – The League of Women Voters, represented by Advancement Project, today filed an amicus brief in RNC v. Mi Familia Vota, asking the Supreme Court to protect the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA). This case stems from the Arizona legislature’s efforts to expand voter purges in ways that undermine federal voter protections. If successful, weakening crucial protections of the NVRA will make it harder for voters to get on the rolls and easier to remove them, including just before an election.
The League of Women Voters argues in its brief that the NVRA’s mandates are clear. States cannot conduct mass voter purges right before an election. The brief further details how the NVRA serves as a critical component of the modern American election system that makes voter registration easier, more accessible, and more precise.

“Our communities deserve an election where everyone can vote freely and safely. Last-minute changes fall hardest on Black, brown, and young voters. That’s not an accident,” said Carmen Daugherty, Executive Director of Advancement Project. “This is a deliberate attempt to suppress the vote and cannot stand. We support The League of Women Voters in calling for the protection of the NVRA.”
“This is a blatant attempt to dismantle decades of voting rights protections and ease the path to chaotic voter purges,” said Celina Stewart, CEO of the League of Women Voters. “Let’s call this what it is: an attack on the freedom to vote justified on a false premise. The National Voter Registration Act exists because the right to vote means nothing if politicians can purge voters from the rolls en masse just before an election. The League fought to secure these protections more than 30 years ago, and we will fight just as fiercely to defend them today.”
