Washington, DC – In response to the policy changes announced by Meta, Advancement Project executive director Judith Browne Dianis released this statement:

“To allow such hateful speech against immigrants, people of color, LGBTQIA people and other marginalized communities demonstrates a stunning abandonment of diversity and inclusivity. These users represent a significant demographic on Meta platforms, many of whom have used Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp to bring about collective social movements like the uprisings of 2020 that advocated for the lives of Black people.

Meta’s new policies are a staggering blow for justice, demonstrating how some tech companies would rather bend over backwards to create a favorable relationship with the Trump administration than assert and defend their own policies.

By implementing these changes, including moving content moderators from California to Texas, Meta will most likely fall short of international standards for hate speech and bring itself under scrutiny for allowing hate to proliferate on its platforms. This creates the enormous challenge of combating even more disinformation than already exists online, which could lead to the mass exodus of users who will no longer find themselves welcome or protected on these platforms.

There is no ethical way to run a technology company without keeping in mind the humanity of its users and the communities they come from.”
