Washington, DC —  On Tuesday, U.S. Department of Justice officials announced that a grand jury in Montgomery, Alabama, returned an indictment against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a nonprofit legal advocacy organization dedicated to fighting white supremacy and other forms of injustice. Advancement Project Interim Executive Director Carmen Daugherty issued the following statement:

“Let’s call the Administration’s deliberate attack on civil rights for what it is: a coordinated effort to stifle dissent and silence our communities who are exercising their right to speak out against oppressive systems. Advancement Project condemns this Administration’s weaponization of the Justice Department and use of government resources to target Southern Poverty Law Center. This is part of a larger attack on the people and organizations that fight hate and discrimination. The Administration’s efforts are not about protecting democracy, but about controlling it.

“Advancement Project stands in solidarity with SPLC in the fight against hate, systemic racism and the violence of white supremacy. By attacking organizations that stand in the way of its dangerous rewrite of history and civil rights, the Administration is making sure that Black and Latine communities have less power to shape the future. But our communities refuse to accept a system that offers them violence and exclusion instead of opportunity and care.

“We will not be intimidated, and we will not be silenced. We will continue the important work of reimagining and actively shaping America’s future, rooted in racial justice and a thriving multiracial democracy.”
